Book my SERU test – Guide

The process of applying to become a licensed Private Hire Driver in London via Transport for London can be confusing.  Especially as you have to navigate through multiple steps and tests before you receive your Private Hire Drivers Licence.

If you are applying to become a private hire driver in London or if you are an existing driver, you may be wondering how to book your SERU assessment.

New Drivers:
For all new drivers the process of application starts online and once you’ve submitted the relevant forms and extra information such as your Medical and DBS check.  You will need to wait for TfL to process your application and then you will get an email and a letter inviting you to complete your Topographical Skills assessment, SERU assessment and English Speaking and Listening Test.

In most cases, all 3 tests will be held on the same day at TfL’s test centre in North Greenwich.

Once you receive the invitation to complete your TfL tests, you would either turn up on the day and get the tests done or get in touch with TfL if you cannot make the date or times they offered.

TfL only allows drivers to change their test date once, unless of course you have compelling reason to change your test date more than once.

Existing Drivers:

The process is almost same for existing drivers.  They will also receive an email and letter of invitation to attend and complete their SERU assessment.  As existing drivers will have already taken their Topographical Skills test in the past, they will only need to complete the SERU assessment.  Some drivers who submitted their English Language requirement (ELR) proof before the deadline will not have to do any more tests, but if TfL did not respond by saying they accepted the proof of ELR, then you will need to do both the SERU assessment and the Speaking and Listening test.

How do I book my SERU assessment?

You can only book the test once TfL has invited you via email and letter.  This essentially means you cannot book it yourself; you are told when to attend the SERU test.  You have the option to adjust the date by contacting TfL if the date doesn’t work for you.

The best way to contact TfL regarding the SERU assessment is to call them on 0343 222 4444.  Make sure you have your application reference number handy and be prepared to wait a long time on the phone as the lines are often very busy.  For good measure, you might consider sending them an email as well, their email address is tphdriverassessments@tfl.gov.uk
